Major Project
Introduction
My project will be focusing on the areas of illustration, animation and editorial design.
The themes I will be exploring throughout this project are, Creationism, Love and Self Sacrifice.
The title of my project will be “Nu Wa, The Chinese Goddess who Created Man”.
Context
Throughout my project I will be using the mediums of Illustration, Editorial Design, Animation and Photography, and the techniques used will be within the realms of graphic design and will involve, digital illustration, typography, scanimation and cinemagraphs.
The final outcome of my project will take the form of both a physical and digital piece. The physical outcome will be an illustrated handscroll including text in two languages about the story of Nu Wa taken from the chinese mythology. The flowing feature of the scroll will be used to give life to the page through illustrations and accompanying text.
For the digital piece I will construct an illustration from a scene of the story with the approach of creating a Cinemagraph towards of the illustration with subtle movements to give a false sense of life to the artwork.
The aim of my project is to visually and narratively communicate the story of Nu Wa from its chinese mythology origin. The reason I have specifically chosen to focus on the story of Nu Wa is because she less known compared to the other gods even though she is the creator of man and the saviour of the earth. The final product will be allocated an exhibition space to clarify that my work is an exhibition piece.
Audience
My target audience anyone who is interested in chinese mythology or who would like to know more about the origin stories of other cultures.
The reason for the vast audience is because I believe that everyone should have access to knowledge of my culture's origin story. I feel as if we are forgetting about myths which are not usually mentioned, like the story of Nu Wa, an important creation story for Chinese Culture. I would like to make this story more memorable for my audience. I believe that every myth is as important as each other.
The best way to do this would be by having my work displayed as an exhibition piece in a national museum space. My intentions are to create an atmospheric exhibition space for a memorable experience for my audience.
Methodology and Research
Throughout my research I will be looking at chinese mythology, focusing primarily on Nu Wa. I will be using the library’s resources to acquire the information by looking at books on the subject. I will also be using looking at ‘how to books’ on the various mediums I am using to improve my skills and learn throughout the process. Furthermore I will be searching for more information on the topic through the use of internet resources. Finally I shall be attending relevant exhibitions on the subject to gather even more information and inspiration by other artist as well as using the internet and looking through books. There is also possibilities to gather information from documentaries and films in this area.
